Allergies and Rosacea

rosacea.jpg

Rosacea presents as red cheeks, acne like rash and sometimes itching and even pain.

Studies have shown that a major instigator for flares in Rosacea are mast cells, which play a roll in your healing and inflammatory response. In people with food allergies and sensitivities, hay-fever and other allergies, their inflammatory response is activated on a regular basis. Mast cells release histamine to help destroy the perceived threat, which causes inflammation in the body. This process can exacerbate Rosacea, Acne and other inflammatory related diseases like autoimmune disease and arthritis.

To help protect your skin from flushing or progressing into a full-blown Rosacea flare, it’s important to take an antihistamine daily. It’s also very important to avoid food, products and situations, like: food you’re allergic to, sugar, gluten, perfumes, very hot showers and saunas, so your skin won’t start the inflammatory process. Once you omit the offensive action or food, it will take your body several days to weeks to recover fully and start to calm down again.

If your Rosacea is still not calming down after omitting the offensive substance or action, you may want to make an appointment to see an allergist or immunologist to see if there is an issue with your immune system causing a chronic inflammatory response. Rosacea is an external sign of the storms stirring inside your body. Finding the reason for your Rosacea flares is helpful in keeping your whole body’s inflammation in check, which helps keep your body healthy, lessens body pain and helps your skin look prettier.

Using the proper products for your skin is even more important in Rosacea prone skin as well. Many products can irritate the skin: perfumes, strong retinols and acids as well as some botanical ingredients like oleander, lavender and tea tree oil. Even the best anti-aging and acne products are too irritating for Rosacea prone skin because they irritate the skin to plump it or use acids to exfoliate; which unfortunately activates the inflammatory response. This activation is good for plumping wrinkles and erasing acne, but bad for redness and Rosacea. A fine balance of active and non-active soothing ingredients is needed for this type of sensitive skin. Have questions? Email Shelly, our skin info guru.

What is a PEEL anyway?

home peel

Many people think of those peel-off masks when they hear “peel”, that’s not what skincare professionals mean when they say peel. A peel is a mask that is applied to the skin to exfoliate dead skin away using fruit acids (enzyme peel) or chemicals (chemical peel). Chemical peels are used for a deeper resurfacing of skin and can be quite painful, numbing cream and anesthesia is usually used for chemical peels and they are legally only supposed to be performed under a doctor’s supervision in most states. J. Renee Peels are all natural and use fruit enzymes from pumpkin, papaya, pomegranate and other fruits as well as natural lactic, glycolic and citric acids. Our exfoliating masks are labeled peels but the actual action of enzymes is to dissolve or digest the dead skin cells, so there is no yanking or peeling action needed, which can damage sensitive skin. Our peels are applied to the skin like a mask in a thin layer and after 10-15 minutes it’s washed off with a cloth, leaving you with soft skin, unclogged pores and a youthful pink in your cheeks. Enzyme peels are the go-to for natural antiaging because they fade hyperpigmentation (age spots, sun damage, melasma, acne scars), they soften skin texture (acne scars, dry skin, bumps), brighten skin tone, dissolve blackheads and help unclog pores to get rid of acne. Peels are MAGIC for your complexion!

Safe Skin Lighteners

1605337984.392832-C9BD48AD-7377-40FF-8AC1-575B8DE5E706.png

J. Renee Organics help create beautiful complexions by fading and removing damaged darkened skin, as well as helping redness from skin conditions. We use organic lightening ingredients to achieve a more blended, youthful tone while also paying close attention to skin texture and health. We make sure your routine is well rounded to prevent irritation, but that are strong enough to make a REAL improvement in tour skin.

Gentle exfoliation on a daily basis allows the skin to stay soft, smoothes out wrinkles, empties out pores to make them look smaller and prevents acne breakouts. Glycolic acid, bromelian, willow bark, salicylic acid and plant enzymes help cellular turnover (via exfoliation), kick-starts collagen production and helps your skin treatments (serum and moisturizer) soak in better, which saves you from using more product.. which in turn, saves you money.

Since your skin is now primed and ready to absorb ingredients that make a significant difference in your beauty, we then throw in ingredients that lighten the skin naturally to improve skin tone. We all have skin discoloration of some sort: acne scars, regular scars, age spots, melasma and UV damage. Our products are packed with lightening ingredients like vitamin A and C, Camu camu, Noni, niacinamide, malic acid, relishing mushrooms and sandalwood to block melanocyte (pigment cells) activity and fade discoloration in the skin.

All of these active ingredients can sometimes irritate sensitive skin types, so of course, we balance out your skincare routine with a multitude of soothing, moisturizing and healing ingredients that help rebuild and plump skin. Ingredients like gotu kola, horsetail extract, comfrey root extract, beta glucan and panthenol help by enhancing immune function to heal. These healing ingredients stimulate collagen to plump the skin, stifle inflammation to lessen redness while also support natural barrier function to protect you from future damage.

The result of this magical formulation of active, then healing ingredients, is flawless, beautiful skin. A youthful glow to the cheeks, with less redness all over. Dark splotches blend into a uniform skin tone. Acne breakouts and irritation is stopped and prevented. Your skin is healthy and happy as well as youthful looking!

NO MORE CETAPHIL OR CERAVE!

IMG_4770.jpeg

WHY are doctors still recommending Cetaphil and CeraVe? Please just stop already!!

As an esthetician, I see MANY clients with sensitive skin that come in and say their doctor referred them to Cerave and/or Cetaphil products for their sensitive skin. This is just baffling to me. The top ingredient in most of their products is alcohol. Because alcohol evaporates so fast, it dries the skin further, can irritate the skin and exaserbate eczema, Rosacea and other sensitive skin conditions including acne.

Cetaphil products contain very few ingredients but many are detrimental to skin AND your health! Their products contain several parabens, which have been scientifically proven (see proof below) to be easily absorbed into the skin, disrupt the endocrine system and mimic estrogen and increase your chance of developing breast cancer among other things. Parabens are to be avoided at all costs and their products are packed with them. Not to mention if you already have sensitive skin, your protective barrier and micro biome is probably already not working to protect you, so these detrimental ingredients are readily being absorbed by your skin.

Cerave products are only slightly better in that they actually contain one or two beneficial ingredients to help the skin and have less alcohol, but they have several parabens in their products as well. If you have a skin issue that needs addressing though (acne, dry skin, redness, rosacea, melasma, etc), they don’t contain a sufficient amount of active ingredients to reverse or relieve issues. In their acne products, the active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, which can help acne in the short-term by drying out the skin, but causes a vicious cycle of over-dry to oily skin and can actually cause more acne and acne scarring in the long run. It also harms your skin’s ability to protect itself from pollution and bacteria because your natural healthy bacteria can’t survive in that environment.

As if cancer causing ingredients aren’t enough to stop using these products, the skin can also become sensitized to products containing parabens, which results in irritation. They also cause pre-term births, shorter menstural cycles that result in infertility and they are detrimental to Earth’s environment. (See articles at the bottom) The man made preservative is not something the body happily accepts.

These product companies have mastered a marketing plan to deceive the public and doctors have fallen prey to the hype. It’s infuriating to estheticians, because we see what the aftermath of chronic use of poor products does to the skin. Clients think they are doing what’s best, what their doctor told them to do, only to see their skin get worse.

Doctors are trained to diagnose disease and to help you heal from it. Legally, unless they received advanced training in esthetics, they are not the professionals to seek out for the beautification of skin or ingredient knowledge and daily skincare routine; a well trained experienced esthetician is. I have received many hours of advanced training on ingredient toxicology in skincare products, oncology skin health and how ingredients work together (or don’t) to help skin look and feel better. Doctors are there to diagnose problems and prescribe controlled substances, unless they have advanced training in esthetics.

This was the primary reason for me creating J. Renee Organics; all the products I tried and was referred to made my skin worse. My products create a healthy skin environment to support your largest organ. With the right amount of moisture, exfoliation and proper hygiene routine, the skin can look and feel beautiful without further intervention. Schedule your skin assessment today and start on the path of the proper routine for YOU. The path to beautiful healthy skin starts as soon as you take the first step.

Scientific American: “Parabens mimic estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors on cells. Research has shown that the perceived influx of estrogen beyond normal levels can in some cases trigger reactions such as increasing breast cell division and the growth of tumors."

Environmental Working Group: “In human studies, researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found decreased fertility was associated with urinary propylparaben (Smith 2013). Another human study linked butylparaben and total urinary paraben levels with decreased fertility, as indicated by decreased menstrual cycle length (Nishihama 2016). Butylparaben levels in the mother’s urine and levels in cord blood were associated with increased odds of pre-term birth and decreased birth weight (Geer 2017).“

Environmental Working Group: “Parabens are also linked to ecological harm, as low levels of butylparaben can kill coral, according to laboratory tests (Danaovaro 2008). Parabens have been detected in surface waters, fish and sediments (Haman 2015). When parabens are combined with chlorinated tap water, a number of chlorinated paraben byproducts can form (Canosa 2006). Little is known about the toxicity of these byproducts, which may be more persistent (Haman 2015).“

Re-opening Timeline

IMG_4533.jpeg

Hello! Long long time no see. I miss you all so much! I wanted to give you an update on Revive Skin Services reopening. This month I signed an extension on my lease in Bend, so once I am able, I will be back there doing services. Troutdale is still under contract as well and ready to open when I am.

As for timeline on reopening: As you probably know by now, my health after my COVID infection in March has been strongly effected. I am starting to finally climb out of the deep medical hole it put me in. Pain is better, energy is better, blood pressure is still an issue…but we are working on that. There is just one major issue that needs to be addressed before I can offer facials again: my hands.

The severe viral infection and the post-viral syndrome that I am suffering from has caused nerve damage and muscle and tendon issues all over my body, but the worst of it has been in my hands. Again, the pain is much better and the weakness is also getting better (I can finally cut my own food again!), but the tendons in my hands have been severely damaged. I have been doing physical therapy, occupational therapy and bracing and nothing has helped. I need to have surgery to open up several tendon sheaths in both hands.

Unfortunately, the surgery has been put on hold by my surgeon until I am off prednisone for some time, as it decimates your immune system and you are left with a high probability of infection if you have surgery. This process takes from a few weeks to a few months.

After my immune function returns, I will then have surgery on one hand and start recovery, which can take up to a month to fully recover. My surgeon says that I can have surgery on both hands pretty close together. REALLY long story short…I am still 3-5 months out to start in-person services again.

I want to thank you for being patient with me and I really hope you don’t replace me, but I’ll understand if you can’t wait. I am offering clients home facial kits to help with the lapse in treatment. They are only $25 and contain the full process of cleansing, pro-peel, mask, toner, serum and moisturizer and they’re all professional grade products that I use in the office too with step by step instructions.

Please let me know if you have skin problems, questions or concerns. I have been offering free skincare answers and advice this whole time; addressing mask related issues mostly. Just text me at (541) 410-2697

Acne At All Ages

adult and teen acne prevention and management

Prevent Scarring. Act now to improve skin health and beauty.

Adult acne is normal and can be managed and prevented with the right routine of skincare products.  Using age appropriate acne products that won’t over-dry the skin and that tackle wrinkles in the process is doable after a proper skin assessment.  Balance is what it’s all about.

J. Renee Organic skincare products offer a potent formula of antioxidants, anti-acne and oil busting ingredients while supporting your natural microbiome and preserving your moisture barrier. Natural salicylic acid from willow bark is anti-inflammatory, exfoliating, and contains polyphenols that hold onto moisture and tannins to aid in toning the skin and making pores appear smaller. Willow bark is just one of our anti-acne ingredients that also plays a role in antiaging. Most of our acne products are also amazing for aging skin, so people with adult acne see very favorable results after using J. Renee Organics Skincare.

Using balanced, well formulated natural products twice daily, provides proven results for acne, acne scarring and the redness and inflammation that accompany acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, without over-drying or using chemicals. If you aren’t sure what’s causing your acne, I highly suggest you to answer our skin type questionnaire and get the right plan to stop and control your ongoing acne. We offer acne sets for your skin type to get you started and then you can order individual products as they run out. We don’t do memberships or automatic purchases, so don’t be afraid of being locked into a plan or having to pay for the whole set when all you need is a toner.
Here are some tips to prevent and control acne:

  • Wash/change pillow cases at least every week, daily if acne is weepy, your skin is very oily, you share your pillow or you sleep with pets.

  • Wash or change all scarves, beanies, Covid face masks and anything that rests on your skin daily.

  • Wash your face with your full skincare routine daily AM and PM no matter what. Be consistent. This is ESSENTAL to prevent breakouts.

  • Do a peel and immediate acne mask afterward weekly or bi-weekly if your acne is severe and persistent, every other week if it’s not.

  • DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE….unless your washing it.

  • To remove the “oil slick” that appears later in the day, use the backs of your hands or a clean tissue, never your fingers.

  • NEVER pick!!! Most of the time, pimples “pop” backward through the skin and release the infection under the skin only to cause more acne. If you simply have to pop it, make sure it has come to a white head first and only do it after a steamy shower when your skin is moist. Never pop an “underground” pimple, it will only result in longer healing time, a mess of inflammation and possible long-term scarring and pitting.

  • If you’re seeing, or more-likely feeling a cystic zit forming, you can spot treat over night with the Glow Serum or the Coco Char Mask for as many nights as it takes for it to go away. Most of the time it will go away before forming into a white head if you catch it in time and don’t touch or pick at it.

  • While the concept of diet causing acne are still controversial, many studies link sugar and dairy as links to the condition. I have seen numerous clients’ acne improve when they omitted dairy and sugar, or drastically limited it in their diets.

  • If your child has acne that starts to get worse around the teen years, it’s imperative to tackle the issue before long term skin damage occurs. With proper education and home hygiene routine, kids can avoid acne drugs and stronger treatment and have better skin all though the puberty process. Your child will have better self-esteem in a time where it’s in short supply; small changes in home routine go a long way. Not getting cystic acne under control can cause life-long scarring, pitting and self-esteem issues. Be proactive in getting your child the right routine; not all acne products are right for all skin types. Using OTC acne products that over-dry the skin will only make the problem worse and discourage your child from being consistent. Get your child a skin assessment and on the right routine ASAP to avoid more expensive treatment options in the future.

For only $25, give the gift of clear skin.

Limit Your Toxic Load

Safe Natural Skincare

Choose skin care products that are natural AND safe for daily use.

The FDA is quite relaxed on the US regulations and on skin care, beauty ingredients. Companies outright lie about beauty claims all the time.  Some ingredients in beauty products disrupt the immune and reproductive systems as well as cause cellular change that can lead to cancer.  While using one or two products with these chemicals may not cause major issues, most of us use many products daily with harmful ingredients (Shampoo, shaving cream, lotions, serums, cleanser, toner, oils, toothpaste, makeup, etc).  Our bodies are constantly bombarded with chemicals and environmental toxins, which in the long run can cause disease and in the short run can cause dryness, acne, irritation, eczema/rosacea flares, rashes and many other skin issues.

It’s best to find safe and natural products that are right for your skin’s unique needs.  Not all organic products are created equal; some natural ingredients are still harmful or too strong for sensitive skin.  If you’re unsure what your skin needs, it’s important to get a professional skin assessment.  Using the wrong products for your skin type can causes further damage and age skin prematurely.

J.Renee Organics are natural and formulated to avoid irritating sensitive skin, while actually helping to diminish redness, irritation, acne, wrinkles, age spots and other skin conditions.  We use natural and safe preservatives, so we can guarantee the long life, efficacy and quality of all our products. Natural salicylic acid, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals and a plethora of antioxidants are properly mixed to provide healthy alternatives to chemical laden products. We only use scientifically proven ingredients that don’t just talk-the-talk but they walk-the-walk so you can arrive at beautiful, youthful skin.

Slow & Reverse Skin Aging

After hundreds of clients, I've found that about 20% accurately guess their skin type. Knowing your skin type is the first step to preventing damage and slowing aging. People assume that if their skin looks oily, that their skin type is oily, which is not always the case. The body is remarkable at adapting to your environment. If you're using drying products, not drinking enough water and are drinking excessive amounts of caffeine or alcohol, your skin will be dehydrated. When skin is dehydrated, oil glands kick into high gear to attempt to correct the imbalance. Unfortunately, this usually creates an oily layer ON TOP of dry skin, which then clogs pores and causes acne. This oil slick is what you see and assume you have an oily skin type, when in fact, you are over dry.

Dialing in your skin type and its specific needs is what is needed for long term skin health and beauty. Constantly changing products, using chemical laden or highly scented products or over use of harsh ingredients (natural or not) can negatively affect the skin. People that have acne tend to over dry the skin making the healing process take longer and may cause scarring that is sometimes impossible to erase. Likewise, people who use too many anti-aging products can actually end up thinning the skin rather than plumping it like they want. Although you are trying your best to treat the problem, you can end up making it worse or even creating new problems to chase down. A twice-daily routine for your specific needs creates an environment where your skin can thrive; you are correcting the problems daily and preventing future problems instead of constantly chasing problems down.

Consistency is how beautiful skin is created and maintained at any age, although there are a few reasons to tweak the program. Hormonal changes like pregnancy, changes in birth control or HRT (hormone replacement therapy), menopause, puberty and moving or constantly traveling to new environments can all negatively affect the skin. Disease and the treatment of diseases can also create new skin issues. Anti-cancer medications like methotrexate also used by people with autoimmune diseases can cause many skin issues like dryness, redness, less protection from UV rays causing age spots and burns. If anything changes with your health or medication list, we may need to redo a skin assessment.

Once you start a proper routine, it takes time for the skin to adapt to the new environment that you are creating. It takes 30-40 days for the skin to be made and then work its way to the surface, where your visual beauty lies. This time is what is needed to see if your new products are working or if they need to be adjusted. Once you find the right routine, STICK WITH IT! It may take a few weeks or months of consistent daily use to see real progress, so don't be discouraged if your skin isn't perfect immediately after starting a new routine.

Find out what your skin type is now get a custom skincare routine and use it twice per day, every day. Diligently following this plan will correct, protect against and prevent skin issues like acne, redness and remove damaged cells from UV and pollution exposure before they negatively affect healthy cells leading to collagen loss and wrinkles. Avoid changing the plan or adding in new products or skincare services unless your skin, daily environment or health changes.
