Skin PH & the Importance of Toner and Lotion

All kinds of things can affect the pH of your skin, like diet, hygiene habits and skin care products.

Without proper skin PH, which was previously thought to be 5.5, your barrier function doesn't work like it should. New research states that healthy skin is even more acidic at a PH of 4-4.5 (7 is neutral). Without the proper skin PH, your healthy skin bacteria (or microbiome) is less effective, causing things like acne, dry skin, sensitive skin and irritation.

This is why using a toner and moisturizer after cleansing is so important! PH is restored with the right toner for your skin type and protected throughout the day by the proper moisturizer.

To help your skin PH stay in a healthy range, make sure your products are right for your skin type. Also, always use a toner and moisturizer after washing and/or rinsing with water. Water is too alkaline, which leaves your skin dry, unprotected & can causes severe irritation and redness over time.

To find out exactly what products you should be using, set up a skin assessment.

Antioxidants Revers Sun Damage

Let’s be honest, tan fat looks better than pasty white fat, but most bronzed beauties are using UV beds instead of spray tanning.   Unfortunately, UV rays, may it be from the sun or a bulb, can break down the integrity of the skin in many ways. It’s not my job to tell you what to do, as an educated esthetician, I’m just here to help you combat the premature aging, cellular mutation and inflammation that tanning causes.  A regularly monthly facial, as well as a skincare routine rich in antioxidants and retinols can not only protect you from the damage that UV causes but it can also reverse past damage.

The science:  UV radiation mutates skin cells, which activates your immune system to kill off the damaged cells, which causes inflammation that degrades the skin’s matrix.  The skin’s matrix is made up of many things, including collagen and elastin, which we need for our skin to look youthful. Years of UV damage causes premature wrinkles, age spots and skin cancers.

Antioxidants in skincare products have been scientifically proven to help erase existing damage and prevent further collagen breakdown from UV and other environmental factors.  Furthermore, retinol suppresses the collagen degrading MMPs (Matrix metalloproteinases) in our skin.  MMPs are increased by UV damage and speed aging and can help cancer grow.  The right skincare routine can help protect against collagen break-down and help reverse age spots and dangerous cellular activity.

An esthetician’s job is to listen, learn and provide services and products that will fit in each client’s lifestyle.  Facials help promote skin beauty and health by removing damaged skin cells, reversing cellular damage and restoring balance.  Educated estheticians also take note of changes to skin and refer their clients to a dermatologist when appropriate. Having an honest relationship with your skin care professional will skirt premature aging and help detect skin cancers early.

Ingredient Spotlight: Peptides

Ingredient spotlight on peptides

Peptides that Improve Skin:

  • Signal peptides are known to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and other proteins that make the skin appear firmer and fuller.

  • Carrier peptides deliver copper and magnesium to the skin. Copper improves collagen production, enhances elasticity and combats the appearance of photoaging skin by brightening age spots.

  • Enzyme-inhibitor peptides slow the body’s natural process of losing collagen.

Peptides are a part of our skin’s natural healing process; they are also added to our skin care products to help stimulate collagen production and help relax facial muscles to smooth-out wrinkles.  There are many different kinds of peptides, each producing a different effect in the skin. When collagen breaks down for any reason (Via lifestyle choices or general aging), it produces peptides; this process is called hydrolysis.

When peptides are applied to the skin topically, fibroblasts interpret it as a signal to produce new collagen, which successfully reduces the look of wrinkles.  It’s pretty amazing that peptides can also inhibit nerve signals to soften fine lines caused by muscle movement, sort of like topical Botox.

The body begins producing less collagen as we age, usually starting in the mid-to-late 20s. After that, people lose about 1% of their collagen per year, and by age 40, collagen levels have dropped dramatically.  Starting an anti-aging skin care routine at any age can help the look of your complexion, but starting it in your 20s and being consistent can help preserve your beauty much longer.

Rosacea, Sensitive Skin & Histamine

With spring upon us, you may notice your facial skin flushing or breaking out. Histamine has been proven to be a major instigator for flares in Rosacea. In people with food allergies and sensitivities, hay-fever and other allergies, their inflammatory response is activated on a regular basis. Mast cells release histamine to help destroy the perceived threat, which causes inflammation in the body. This process can exacerbate Rosacea, Acne and other inflammatory related diseases.

To help protect your skin from flushing or progressing into a full-blown Rosacea flare, it’s important to take an antihistamine daily. It’s also very important to avoid food, products and situations, like: food you’re allergic to, sugar, gluten, perfumes, very hot showers and saunas, so your skin won’t start the inflammatory process. Once you omit the offensive action or food, it will take your body several days to weeks to recover fully and start to calm down again. If your Rosacea is still not calming down after omitting the offensive substance or action, you may want to make an appointment to see an allergist or immunologist to see if there is an issue with your immune system causing a chronic inflammatory response.

Rosacea is an external sign of the storms stirring inside your body. Finding the reason for your Rosacea flares is helpful in keeping your whole body’s inflammation in check, which helps keep your body healthy, lessens body pain and helps your skin look prettier. Using the proper products for your skin is even more important in Rosacea prone skin as well. Many products can irritate the skin: perfumes, strong retinols and acids as well as some botanical ingredients like oleander, lavender and tea tree oil. Even the best anti-aging and acne products are too irritating for Rosacea prone skin because they irritate the skin to plump it or use acids to exfoliate; which unfortunately activates the inflammatory response. This activation is good for plumping wrinkles and erasing acne, but bad for redness and Rosacea. A fine balance of active and non-active soothing ingredients is needed for this type of sensitive skin.

Rosacea & Sensitive Skin Product Set - $140

This calming, gentle set of products are amazing for sensitive skin and Rosacea. They are synergistically formulated to be anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial.  These products work together to support a healthy microbiome so that your skin can regain its natural ability to protect you from pollution and topical allergic triggers.  People with mast cell conditions, allergic conditions, and people going through cancer treatment or that have Rosacea and extremely sensitive skin will see a more balanced complexion, less dry skin and itching, less breakouts and less redness.

Ingredient Spotlight: Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is an AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) that comes from sugarcane, sugar beets, pineapple, cantaloupe and unripe grapes.  It helps make skin soft and lessens the look of wrinkles by removing dead skin (exfoliating) and actually stimulates skin cells to produce more collagen. Most people can use it without side effects, but at higher strengths (usually in strong peels), some people need to be cautious because it can cause irritation in extremely sensitive skin types and sometimes causes dark spots in darker skin types. AHAs at low concentrations are beneficial to the skin because it helps regulate inflammation in the skin long term by removing UV damaged skin.  Products formulated with low amounts of glycolic acid used daily can help skin glow long term.

Preserve and Protect Set:
Formulated gently with glycolic acid and other anti-aging and anti-acne ingredients.

Preserve and Protect Set
$124.00

Aging skin needs a balanced routine of exfoliation, moisture, vitamins and minerals.  Our “Preserve and Protect” skin care set addresses all of these needs.

  • Exfoliating Cleanser helps remove dirt, germs, pollution and dead skin damaged by UV rays. The gentle enzymes start the process of turning over the skin while the blend of B5, vitamin E, rosemary, rosehips and other herbs soothe skin during the cleansing process.

  • Bomb and Calm Toner is a potent mix of antioxidants to help restore microbiome and reverse signs of aging.  Vitamin A and glycolic acid helps diminish wrinkles while vitamin A helps fade age spots and acne scarring.  We balance out all these active ingredients with calming MSM and aloe to calm redness and inflammation.

  • No Problems Serum is not only amazing for aging skin, it does double duty and eliminates acne too.  Sulfur penetrates and creates elasticity while niacinamide reduces redness and inflammation. Vitamin D in the Winter

To get enough vitamin D from the sun, only 10–30 minutes of midday sunlight is needed, a couple days per week. People with darker skin need a bit more; conversely, people with pale skin need less. Melasma Plan

“…Recent scientific evidence shows that a melasma can be linked to stress, depression and anxiety.“

Melasma is a skin condition that causes the darkening of the skin on the forehead, cheeks, chin and upper lip.  It’s thought to be caused by hormonal factors but in recent research, it’s also been found to be involved in the immune system’s inflammatory response.  Current suggestions for treatment focus on sunscreen of 30+SPF worn daily, avoidance of direct and indirect sun exposure (especially UVA rays), whitening creams and exfoliating away pigmented skin with peels, microdermabrasion and other esthetic modalities.

UVA rays are like pouring oil on a fire, they stoke the production of melanin, which makes melasma considerably worse.  UVA rays peak in early morning hours and can easily pass through glass, even on cloudy days and doesn’t cause a sun burn.  Intense heat also causes melasma skin to darken.  People with careers dealing with high heat situations or intense sunlight will have the hardest time managing this condition.  My worst case of melasma came in from a client who was a pilot.  The several hours of windshield time a pilot, long-haul driver or the like is very detrimental to the skin, even without melasma. Saunas and steam rooms should also be avoided for people trying to manage their melasma.

Recent scientific evidence shows that a melasma can be linked to stress, depression and anxiety.  This comorbidity does not surprise me; these conditions cause inflammation in the body.  Furthermore, antidepressant medications cause you to be more sensitive to UV damage.

As an esthetician, I recommend starting a series of Pigment Fading Microdermabrasions as well as a home routine that gently exfoliates amd lightens skin with every application. How many treatments and at what frequency is completely individual. The esthetician will assess your skin and write up a plan for your specific needs. Some people are too sensitive for microdermabrasion, so they will be referred to Pigment Fading Facials or Home Facial Kits to fade and blend the skin tone.

Ethnic Skin Solutions

J Renee Organics skin care products are perfect for all skin types. For example, African American skin is unique because it experiences TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) more than Caucasian skin types. This means that they experience more dry skin and need more attention on trapping in moisture.

Darker skin types also have more inflammation when suffering from acne, which leads to hyperpigmentation (dark scars).

J Renee Organics helps both of these problems with our acne and dry skin specific products. We formulate our skin care products to help fade dark spots, lessen inflammation in the skin, and trap in water for proper barrier function while eliminating the bacteria that causes acne. Proper barrier function is key to protecting the skin from external acne causes, as well as making skin soft and plump.

We use antioxidants, vitamin C and gentle exfoliants to help blend skin tone and clear up acne long term. No gimmicks. No chemicals. No skin flaking. Our products are gentle enough for even the MOST SENSITIVE SKIN while effectively beautifying complexions of all races, skin types, sexes and stages of age and health.

It’s simple: get a skin assessment (online or in person, each way you “meet with” a well educated esthetician, not automated), receive a plan and start your skin care routine. Routines are very personalized but ALL HOME ROUTINES ARE EFFECTIVE when used as directed. We guarantee our 11 years of experience with skin, skin science and ingredients, research and tested skin care routines are what you have been looking for all these years. Finally have a healthy sustainable answer for beautiful bare skin.

Plant Based Skin Care- Proof is in the Plump!

It’s hard to penetrate the barrier of the skin; a healthy and functioning skin barrier is there to protect your skin from dehydration, germ penetration, allergens, irritants, & ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species cause sun damage & wrinkles because of the sun’s radiation). That said, we can adjust the barrier to absorb specific ingredients to improve complexion and skin texture. This is how proper daily skin care, rich in antioxidants, can increase skin regeneration, elasticity, smoothness and thus help the appearance of aging.

Topically (creams, lotions, etc), there are two ingredient types that are most helpful in slowing skin aging: antioxidants and cell regulators which help cells live longer and healthier. The antioxidants promote healthy collagen (plump skin), while cell regulators like retinol help your body to produce more collagen. Think youthful plump skin (ample healthy collagen always being produced).

Not all fountain-of-youth cream claims can be proven. MANY ingredients can’t penetrate your skin’s protective shield (barrier function). With massive amounts of money, scientists have been researching smaller molecular ingredients that will absorb and work to rejuvenate skin. So far, antioxidants are the go-to small molecule for skin elasticity (skin stretch and snap-back), redness and age spots. One study proved that with a consistent daily skin care routine containing plant based antioxidants, in just 3 months, people had tighter skin, less redness, better texture and less age spots.

Botanical (plant) ingredients have been proven to be effective cell regulators, “acting directly on collagen metabolism to stimulate collagen production as well as elastin fibers.” Plump, healthy and youthful looking skin from Mother Nature herself!

Can a shower wash a tan off?

Will a shower wash off a suntan even from a tanning bed?

A. No. Your tan is made in cells inside your body (called melanocytes) as an attempt to try to protect you from the UV damage. The depth (how dark) a tan you end up with is a direct reflection of the damage caused to your cells. Darker tan = More cellular radiation damage.

Skin cancer is the most preventable, most prevalent cancer in the US, with numbers higher than all other cancers put together. This includes melanoma, which has increased by 77% since 1992 and is responsible for 75% of skin cancer deaths. UVR radiation (consisting of UVA, UVB and UVC rays) is obtained from sun and tanning bed exposure alike. Just one indoor tanning session increases the likelihood of developing melanoma by 20%!

Alternatives: spray tan or lotions. They contain a plant based Ingredient called DHA which reacts with the skin, resulting in the production of melanoidins, causing your skin to darken. Although this method is safer in comparison to UVR radiation, there are still drawbacks. Studies on topically applied DHA have shown to cause skin sensitivities and rashes, worsen rosacea, cause sun sensitivity making you more likely to burn and can increase free radical damage in the skin (prematurity aging the skin). Also, some tanning accelerators have chemicals in them called benzyl nicotinate, said to increase blood flow to help melanocytes produce more pigment. Others have a chemical called Tyrosine, which is said to help produce more melanin (tan) but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.

Tanning is a beauty preference that I hope fades in the south as it has in the NW. The only healthy skin tone is your God-given one. Taking care of the skin you’re in will provide you with a glowing complexion into your 50, 60s and help you to live into your 80 and 90s even, by avoiding the cancers proven to be caused by UVR radiation. As long as you protect it and use the proper skin care routine for your skin type, you’ll love the skin you’re in.

Thyroid Function & Your Skin

Optimal thyroid function is important for beautiful skin, unfortunately thyroid disease is very common.  Hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormones) can cause very dry skin making you itchy and flakey and make your skin look more wrinkled and crepey.  Hypothyroidism can also cause puffy eyes, thinning eyebrows, course brittle hair, brittle nails and the dreaded weight gain.  Extremely high thyroid levels can cause a condition called myxedema, which presents as a thick, scaly, dry skin rash.

Be on top of your condition and moisturize properly.  Skin creams that have a thicker feel to them are best, but make sure they aren’t clogging your pores causing more skin problems.  It may be best to get a skin assessment to be sure about what products to use for you. Drinking plenty of water will help the look and feel of your skin as well as taking less-hot showers and using humidifiers. Make sure your skincare products offer exfoliating ingredients so your dry skin doesn’t build up.  A regular peel with your esthetician is a great help; usually scheduled 3-6 weeks apart.  According to dermatologists, an antihistamine can also help with eye puffiness as well as a caffeine eye roller (found at any drugstore) or cold compress.

Conversely, hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormones) can cause skin to look moist and smooth, but causes hyperpigmentation problems like melanoderma (tanning of the skin), melasma (blotchy spots, mask of pregnancy) and redness flushing of the skin due to increased metabolism.  Also in the mix for hyperthyroidism is anxiety, insomnia, weight loss, rapid heart rate, sweating, all-over itchiness and thinning hair.  Many of the listed symptoms will cause skin problems including acne, wrinkles, puffy eyes and hyperpigmentation.

Many things can help your skin with this condition, but it will take persistence and time.  Regular peels, microderm, facials and/or LED Light Therapy will help unclog sweaty pores and clear up acne as well as fade melasma and other hyperpigmentation and keep it in check.  Unfortunately, the hyperpigmentation resulting from thyroid disease never goes away and needs constant exfoliation to achieve a more uniform skin tone.  Radiation (from sun and other sources) will cause your melanocytes (pigment cells) to go haywire, make sure you wear sunscreen, hats and try to stat out of direct sunlight when you can.  A proper home routine will also make all the difference; schedule a skin assessment to make sure you are spending your money wisely to make the look of this disease less apparent.

Sun Damage Reversed by Antioxidants

Why it's important to remove UV damaged skin.

Beauty and the Tan

Let’s be honest, tan fat looks better than pasty white fat, but most bronzed beauties are using UV beds instead of spray tanning.   Unfortunately, UV rays, may it be from the sun or a bulb, can break down the integrity of the skin in many ways. It’s not my job to tell you what to do, as an educated esthetician, I’m just here to help you combat the premature aging, cellular mutation and inflammation that tanning causes.  A regular monthly facial, as well as a skincare routine rich in antioxidants and retinols can not only protect you from the damage that UV causes but it can also reverse past damage.
